Fighting cancer.
What a fucking shitty disease.

A friend of mine was told yesterday he needed a brain operation to remover a cancerous tumour, he is 46 with two 11 year old kids.

Then I read on line that an actress off the Casualty programme has just died of breast cancer aged 41, she leaves a young child.

Also the lady that provided the voice to Mrs Wolowitz on the Big Bang Theory died of cancer yesterday.

When I think of all the money we waste on overseas aid and all the money that children in need sends abroad when what they should be doing with it is fighting this evil disease and looking for a cure.

Sorry for the rant.

Hammersfan43, good that you have been clear for the last 3 years. All the best and hopefully it won't come back.
Sadly for my dad the cancer spread very quickly to his lymph nodes, liver and into his pelvis.
The bladder cancer isn't going to take him they are more concerned with the lymph nodes as from there it can go anywhere. He had an operation on his bladder but it broke through the lining of his bladder so it looks grim.
Chemo will keep him alive for now but it will take him sooner rather than later.

This is the NICE chemo. The last one nearly killed me a year ago. I'm supposed to be able to work with this one. But I can't get out of the fucking khazi!

Very sorry to hear about your dad. I too have had this too which was diagnosed as the aggressive type. I had an operation and that was followed by a full course (and I do mean a full course) of treatment using BCG which was put into the bladder 'the nasty way'. I'm clear at the moment and have been for the past 3+ years.

When I was first diagnosed, I did a little research and discovered a cancer map. As it turns out, I live in a high risk area for bladder cancer. Would be interesting to see if your father lives in one too. The cancer maps can be found here:

http://www.envhealthatlas.co.uk/homepage/gotoatlas.html

For other types of cancer use the drop-down menu on the "Health conditions" main map.

Bladder cancer maps are here:

http://www.envhealthatlas.co.uk/eha/Bladder/

I've no idea why certain area's of the country are more affected than others. I would also be interested to learn what treatment your father have received to try and cure his bladder cancer before it spread. The BCG worked for me but I was wondering if it's as good as they say it is.

Thanks.

Re: Fighting cancer.
I don't think you're necessarily wrong Brentford. There are so many causes and so many different cancers that I sometimes wonder if it is becoming little more that a generic term.
My wife has isolated a cancer causing virus. When I asked the doctor what caused mine he just shrugged and said it could be the smoking, it could be any number of things.

Cancer is as common as muck these days!
People need to look more at the causes and not the cure umho. Modern day living is to blame, too much pollution, shit food and stress.

Re: Fighting cancer.
My uncle died of cancer, horrible disease.

He would also have thought you were a cunt for saying

"When I think of all the money we waste on overseas aid and all the money that children in need sends abroad when what they should be doing with it is fighting this evil disease and looking for a cure."

We give a tiny percentage of tax money to overseas aid.

And Children In Need does not give money aboard at all, not a penny. Other funds like Comic Relief do give half their money to foreign causes... like supporting hospitals that might help treat kids with cancer for example.

What the fuck does foreign aid and charity have to do with cancer FFS.

Re: Fighting cancer.
They spend plenty of money on cancer reaasech here 29 staff members on over £100k and another hundred odd on over £60k for starters. In total over 3000 staff members all earning to find a cure.

Whilst sitting on reserves of investments of hundreds of millions of pounds which secures their future they spend 80% of the money raised through events on research, the other 20% they bank and further invest. They have a long term vision so one day they will find that cure.

Lost my dad to a brain tumour two years ago.

Fittest, healthiest person I knew, went through all the ops and rounds of chemo and radiotherapy. Was dead a year to the day after first diagnosis and was heart breakingly miserable through it all. Fucking evil illness and I truly wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Couldn't agree more, as I mentioned my wife is a viral oncologist (thats what it says on her CV but, because she started working with HIV she's also an epidemiologist and an immunologist.

There has never been a better time to get cancer.
